Colabo

Dan Pape is the mastermind behind the Colabo project, we caught dan on the phone last week for this interview.

For the people who don’t know. What is Colabo?

Colabo is a group of riders that were picked because of their ability to inspire the community through their riding as opposed to picking them based on their standing’s on the podium. We are also about camaraderie and pushing the sport to a whole new level regardless of what brand of board you have under your feet.

The project has evolved throughout the last couple of years, how did you come to making a film.

Some friends of mine were making a music video and I went to the set to check it out. While on set I met a really cool filmmaker and started talking about filming and how I would like to bring our [long board] filming to the next level. He showed a great deal of interest so we deiced to do an experiment shoot on North Boundary road with full HD cameras and his 40 ft boom. The stoke was so evident after the first shoot we started to do a shoot or two a month and the project just kind of evolved into where we are today in the process of making a full length movie. We want to really show people in our community and the people around the world the best side of our sport using cutting edge filming and camera’s to bring us past all the low quality Youtube videos.

What has been the most memorable day in the filming the project?

Um…. I would probably say the best day to this point, was when Max and some of the Landyachthz crew went up to Mt Baker. It was a beautiful spring day, there were 10 ft snow banks on the side of the road, and everybody had a crazy energy. It turned out to be a pretty crazy day. Being up a mountain on top of the world and filming skateboarding with a bunch of friends is an experience that only a few people get to be a part of.

There has been a lot of positive and negative talk of your project, can you talk little bit about that?

The majority of the feedback we have been getting about out production has been all positive. Most people like how it is helping bring our sport to the next level. I would say that an overwhelming majority of the feedback has been really positive. As far as the negative feedback goes, we have just used it to try to make our production better. As for the accusation that we are glamourizing the sport, the video is really not about glamourizing anything. The movie is more about showcasing the true talent and the true skills of the riders. You can’t really do that with clips on Youtube. I think to really get it out there to a larger audience the video really needs to be done right.

What has been the toughest part of the project so far?

The toughest part of the project has definitely been getting sponsors for the video. Right now we only have raw footage and an idea so it’s a really tough sell. I think that it is that the companies that can afford to sponsor something like this are use to having a finished project to decide on whether or not they want to get involved. I think that when we start to work on our second project it will be a lot easer to get sponsors on board.

So I hear that you have just finished filming, what’s the next step?

Oh yeah it’s a huge, huge weight off our shoulders to have all the filming done. In the past 11 months we have faced countless road blocks and challenges. It feels so good to have it all done.
I guess the next step is the post-production phase and to start editing the video. Although the last 11 months has been really challenging for both the crew and riders, the biggest challenge is still ahead. I think that no matter how good your footage is if its not put together in the right way than it won’t really showcase the riders and film makers that worked so hard to make this happen.

Danger bay to LA

A road trip Photo journal from the Madrid van.

After 3 days of skateboarding, and partying 2 days of destroying Vancouvers hills and parks it was hard to believe that things could escalate from here. The drive south left off from the daggers house aka “the stoup” at around 6 pm when the van was emptied of 7 days of road trip filth to make room for the new collection of empty beef nugget bags , beer cans and grease stained fast food wrappers. The following is a incomplete memory in photos and video of a epic road trip in the Madrid van.
